Heavy Bleeding During Medical Abortion: How Much is Too Much?

Heavy Bleeding During Medical Abortion: How Much is Too Much?

Though bleeding will occur when you take abortion drugs, heavy bleeding that doesn’t stop can indicate a complication. If you suspect something isn’t right, even if you’re unsure, you should seek immediate medical attention.

If you are considering a medication abortion, Lighthouse Pregnancy Resource Center can help you understand the warning signs of complications so you know what’s expected and what can be a cause for concern. We’re here to help you prioritize your health and safety.

Is It a Side Effect or a Possible Complication?

During a medical abortion, two drugs called mifepristone and misoprostol work together to end the pregnancy. Mifepristone blocks progesterone, which causes the uterine lining to thin and the pregnancy to detach and end. Then, misoprostol triggers contractions that expel the pregnancy from the body.

Abdominal cramping and vaginal bleeding will occur when these drugs are taken. However, how will you know if the bleeding is too severe?

The Mayo Clinic notes that heavy bleeding—soaking two or more pads an hour for two hours in a row—requires medical attention. Other warning signs requiring immediate care include:

  • Bad pain in the stomach area or pelvis
  • Chills or body aches
  • Fast heart rate
  • Fever that lasts more than four hours or that starts in the days after you take misoprostol
  • Foul-smelling vaginal discharge

Remember, if something feels “off,” you owe it to yourself to seek care. Your healthcare provider should be contacted immediately, and emergency care may be needed.

If you’re still weighing your pregnancy options, it’s essential to consider the risks and side effects of abortion procedures. By doing so, you remain proactive and assess your specific situation, including your health.
